The ETE Group today signed up to the “Pact for More and Better Jobs for Young People”, an initiative of the José Neves Foundation which enjoys the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, and through which the ETE Group commits to a set of established targets, to be achieved by 2026, aimed at creating more attractive conditions for recruiting and retaining young people, investing in their development and guaranteeing them quality employment.

The ultimate aim of this initiative is to bring about real change in the current context of vulnerability associated with youth employment.

The ETE Group’s adherence to this pact will have an even more positive impact on its Human Resources Policy, as the ETE Group’s practices are entirely geared towards attracting, retaining, supporting and developing young workers, notably through the Trainee Programme, which welcomes young people from various fields, ranging from Management to Logistics, and provides them with a unique experience lasting between 9 and 18 months. The Group also runs summer and professional work placements, which aim to prepare young people for the labour market and for the specific realities of this sector.

Carlos Oliveira, Chief Executive of the José Neves Foundation, emphasises that the Pact “is a very important agreement for the country, bringing together businesses and public bodies to address a problem the country has been grappling with for far too many years: the precarious nature of employment for young people, even the most highly qualified. “Our expectation is that this commitment will lead to the creation of solutions for structural change that will reverse the current state of affairs, and that will provide a response to the needs and aspirations of young Portuguese people who wish to find in our country the conditions they seek for professional advancement and personal dignity.”

In addition to the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic, the José Neves Foundation and the Secretary of State for Labour, the following organisations are also associated with the Pact: the Business Roundtable Portugal Association, the National Youth Council (CNJ), the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), and the Youth Employment Observatory (OEJ), which is responsible for monitoring the Pact.

The “Pact for More and Better Jobs for Young People” defines young people as those up to and including the age of 29. The progress targets for 2026, set out in the document, are tailored according to each company’s potential for progress.

The “Pact for More and Better Jobs for Young People” follows on from the launch of the White Paper in December 2022, an initiative of the José Neves Foundation, the Youth Employment Observatory and the International Labour Organisation for Portugal, under the High Patronage of His Excellency the President of the Republic. The document provides an analysis of youth employment in Portugal and the vulnerabilities faced by young people, and identifies several priority areas for action to create more and better jobs for young people.
