Port Operations and Concessions

For Grupo ETE, ports are more than crucial points for the development of national and international trade and industry. They have always been part of its strategy and identity, making it a reference in port operations at both national and international levels.

Grupo ETE occupies today a leading position as a port operator with the largest number of concessions in Portugal. With a strong presence in various parts of the country, combined with innovation and the sustainability of port operations, the ETE Group also stands out for effectively contributing to the development of trade and industry in Portugal.

Port Concessions
The Group holds four port concessions in the largest and busiest ports in Portugal:

  • Leixões;
  • Lisbon;
  • Setúbal;
  • Sines;

Strategic ports
In addition to this, it is also a port operator in four strategic ports, where it operates under a free-quay regime:

  • Viana do Castelo;
  • Aveiro;
  • Figueira da Foz;
  • Azores;

Aveiport is one of the three licensed port operators in the port of Aveiro, operating under a free quay regime. It has been part of the ETE Group since 2007 and has been consolidating its market leadership, providing services for handling various types of cargo, such as solid bulk (food and non-food), project cargo, used cargo, and general cargo.

Furthermore, Aveiport is the only operator that ensures weight control at the Aveiro port terminal, offering daily activity reports shared with clients, its own infrastructure, including warehouses for general cargo, bulk, steel products and wood pellets, and even its own workshop within the port area.

  • Annual handling of 850,000 tonnes of bulk;
  • Annual handling of 350,000 tonnes of general cargo;

To ensure maximum efficiency and quality in operations, it has:

1. Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 2 mobile cranes with a capacity of up to 104 tons;
    • 1 rail crane with a capacity of up to 39 tons;
    • Bulk hoppers;
    • Forklifts, front loaders, and Reachstackers;
    • Conveyor belts for loading ships;

2. Technical department with its own workshop in the port area:

    • 4 covered warehouses with 8,400 m2 dedicated to bulk cargo;
    • 1 warehouse with 1,400 m2 dedicated to general cargo;
    • 1 warehouse with 1,400 m2 dedicated to steel products with a 30-ton overhead crane;
    • 1 silo with a storage capacity of 6,600 tons for wood pellets;

ETE SA – Empresa de Tráfego e Estiva, concessionaire of TMPB – Terminal Multiusos do Poço do Bispo, plays an important role in port operations at the Port of Lisbon. Recognised as a leading port operator in Portugal, it operates in public quays, concessions, and private quays in the Port of Lisbon, offering efficient solutions for handling various types of cargo, namely general cargo, solid bulk, and project cargo.
With its own infrastructure that includes covered storage, it carries out operations both in terminals at the Port of Lisbon and offshore in the Tagus River. This versatility ensures essential logistical support for cargo handling.

  • 1000 m2 of covered storage;
  • Anual movement of 1,000,000 tonnes of bulk;
  • Annual movement of 500,000 tonnes of general cargo;

To ensure efficiency and meet market needs, it has a wide range of its own equipment, including:

Portsines – Operações Portuárias SA, is a multipurpose terminal located in Sines, specialising in various port operations, namely the handling of solid and liquid bulk cargo, general cargo, and project cargo.

It is the only deep-water terminal in Portugal, capable of accommodating vessels with draughts up to 18.0 metres, ensuring efficient operations for various types of cargo.
Due to its strategic location, Portsines is an important logistics hub for Europe, offering easy access to the railway and road network, ensuring efficient connections for cargo transport at national and international levels.

With a total area of 243,000 m², the terminal has four berths:

  • Pier 1A, with 345 metres in length and two unloaders with a unit capacity of 2,000 tons/hour;
  • Pier 1B, Quay 2, and Quay 3 ( Finger Quay), with lengths of 305, 75, and 204 metres respectively;

It is equipped with a wide range of equipment including:

  • A port mobile crane with a capacity of 124 tonnes;
  • Two gantries with a handling capacity of 2,000 tonnes/hour;
  • A shiploader with a capacity of 1,500 tonnes/hour;
  • A Ro-Ro ramp;;
  • A loading conveyor;

Since 2015, the TSA – Terminal de Santa Apolónia has been the concessionaire of the Lisbon Multipurpose Terminal (TML), currently, with the ETE Group as the sole port operator.

  • Handling: 130,000 TEUs/year

Specialising in containerised cargo, TSA works in partnership with shipping companies operating lines to the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, playing an essential role in connecting these regions to the mainland.

To ensure maximum efficiency and quality in operations, it has:

1. They also have the following infrastructures:

    • Open storage area of around 40,000 m²;
    • Berthing area with 480 metres in length;
    • 9.0 m draft;
    • 480 m of quay;
    • Parking capacity for approximately 2300 TEUs;
    • 7,700 m² for receiving/delivering conventional cargo (light and heavy vehicles);

2. Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 1 crane of 100 tonnes;
    • 2 Reachstakers;
    • 2 Forklifts;

The TCGL – Leixões General Cargo and Bulk Terminal – is strategically located in the Port of Leixões, specialising in various port operations, including general cargo, solid and liquid bulks, Ro-Ro, project cargo and heavy-lift. This terminal is the result of a strategic partnership between the ETE Group and the Artur José Borges Group, with the aim of strengthening the offer of logistics and port solutions in Portugal.

  • Anual handling of 1,500,000 tonnes of general cargo;
  • Annual handling of 3,000,000 tonnes of bulk;

The terminal has an area of 135,000 m² of hardstanding and 3,000 m² of covered area, offering ample space for the storage and handling of goods.

To ensure maximum efficiency and quality in operations, it has:

1. Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 7 mobile cranes;
    • quay cranes with a maximum reach of 48 metres and the capacity to handle up to 150 tonnes;

2. Horizontal handling equipment:

    • Forklifts;
    • Reachstackers;
    • Loaders;
    • Rotary machines;

With railway access and an operating licence at the Port of Viana do Castelo, the TCGL strengthens Portugal’s logistics and port infrastructure, offering complete and efficient solutions for transport and cargo handling needs.

TERSADO is the concessionaire of the Port of Setúbal, specialising in the handling of general cargo, containers, bulk solids and liquids, and Ro-Ro cargo. With robust infrastructure and advanced equipment, the company significantly contributes to logistical and port efficiency in Portugal and on the international stage. Its certifications ensure high-quality and reliable goods transportation services.

With Setefrete, both companies handle:

  • Annual movement of 1,500,000 tonnes of bulk.
  • Annual handling of containers equivalent to 20,000 TEUs of reefers.

To ensure maximum efficiency and quality in operations, it has:

1. Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 4 mobile cranes with a capacity between 60 tonnes and 124 tonnes;
    • 8 rail cranes with a capacity of up to 25 tonnes;
    • Front loaders;
    • Forklifts;
    • Bulk hoppers;
    • Stowage materials to support operations;

2. They also have the following infrastructures:

    • 100,000 m² of hardstanding;
    • 4.000 m² of covered storage;
    • 860m of quay;
    • Technical department with its own workshop within the port area;

SETEFRETE is a port operator at the two main terminals of the Port of Setúbal, standing out for managing operations in strategic areas.

In conjunction with Tersado, they handle:

  • Annual movement of 760,000 tonnes of general cargo;
  • Annual movement of 700,000 tonnes of bulk;

At the Mitrena Solid Bulk Terminal – TERMITRENA, with an area of 180,000 m² and capacity for ships up to 200 metres long and with a draft of 10.5 metres, it carries out specialised operations in solid bulk.

At the Public RO-RO Terminal, it is responsible for unloading, loading, preparation and shipment of automobiles, consolidating its position as a reference logistics operator in the automotive sector.

OPERPDL

OPERPDL is the exclusive port operator of São Miguel Island, Ponta Delgada, resulting from a partnership between Açorportos (Transinsular and Mutualista), P.T.L. (Cargo Receivers Association), and the Ports of the Azores. Playing an essential role in the region’s logistics chain, it handles containerized cargo, bulk cargo, and solid cargo, ensuring it meets the specific needs of an insular region.

  • Anual movement: 75,000 general cargo;
  • Anual movement: 338,500 solid bulk;

Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 2 Cranes with a capacity of up to 100 Tons;

OPERPDL

OPERTERCEIRA is a port operator that leads port operations on Terceira Island, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Formed by Açorportos (Transinsular and Mutualista), Praia Cargas (Cargo Receivers Association), and the Ports of the Azores, it is dedicated to the handling of containers and solid bulk in the region and ensures the movement of cargo within the region.

  • Anual movement: 30,600 Tons of general cargo;
  • Anual movement: 87,500 Tons of solid bulk;

Own equipment for cargo handling:

    • 2 Cranes with a capacity of up to 100 Tons;

OPERTRI

OPERTRI is a port operator responsible for the ports of São Roque do Pico, Horta, and Velas de São Jorge, in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Constituted by Açorportos (Transinsular and Mutualista), T.T.L. (Cargo Receivers Association), and Ports of the Azores, the company focuses on the handling of containers and solid bulk, ensuring the logistical integration of the central group islands.
